{"id":2780,"date":"2019-09-20T21:20:50","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T21:20:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/academicsolidarity.com\/?page_id=2780"},"modified":"2020-05-15T23:45:16","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T23:45:16","slug":"zirve-university-report","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.academicsolidarity.com\/?page_id=2780&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Zirve University Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n<strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Zirve\nUniversity is a foundation university which started its educational\nactivities in 2009 in Gaziantep. When it was closed in July 2016, it\nwas continuing its education with 302 faculty members and 9500\nstudents. Of the University had the Faculty of Education, the Faculty\nof Dentistry, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Economics\nand Administrative Sciences, the Faculty of Communication, the\nFaculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Health\nSciences and the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts, the\nVocational School of Higher Education, three institutes and nine\nresearch centers. During the short education period, the university\nserved with its modern education buildings, modern research centers,\ntraining hospitals and various social and sporting activities. Of the\nstudents, 10% were international students from all over the world.\nThe pressures aimed at the founders of Zirve University reached the\nhighest level in 2016. Finally, in July 2016, the administration was\ntransferred to the government-appointed trustee.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Later\non, the University of Zirve was closed on 23 July 2016 by a Decree\nbased on the State of Emergency. Detention and arrests, which began\nbefore the closure order, continued in the months and years that\nfollowed. University founders and dozens of academics and employees\nwere sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and the assets of the\nfounding committee were seized. Due to the hostile attitude, the\nstudents suffered serious losses. Scholarships previously granted by\nZirve University were discontinued and official documents were\nlooted. Unfairly seized University buildings were first used as the\nadditional campus of Gaziantep State University and then allocated to\na another newly established university. This university, which had\nten thousand students before, is still waiting idle in the last three\nyears.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\t<strong>General\n\tInformation About the University<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\tZirve\n\tUniversity was established on 28 February 2009 in Gaziantep by the\n\t\u0130pek Culture and Education Foundation. The University Board of\n\tTrustees included important business and political figures of\n\tGaziantep. The university was built on approximately one thousand\n\tacres of land. The main campus of the University was called\n\tK\u0131z\u0131lhisar Campus. It had a total closed area of 110 thousand\n\tsquare meters. In addition, there was a forty-acre satellite campus\n\tin Mersin to carry out activities on shipping. Near the campus area,\n\tAntepia housing project with approximately 3,500 residences was\n\trealized for students. In our university was &#8220;Shipbuilding and\n\tMarine Engineering Faculty&#8221; which only a few universities in\n\tTurkey has. The University was established in a mix-oriented\n\tstructure where research and education were carried out together.\n\tThe language of education was English in the Faculties of\n\tEngineering, Architecture and Fine Arts, Economics and\n\tAdministrative Sciences, and Turkish in others. There were many\n\tdifferent levels of English education programs for all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\tApproximately\n\t20% of the students of Zirve University received a full scholarship\n\twithout paying tuition fees, and approximately 20% of them had a\n\tgrant of 50% discount. The University also gave some other\n\tscholarschips as follows: Needs Scholarship (according to the\n\tresults of the Central University Exam); Art, Culture and Sports\n\tScholarship (depending on the representation of the University);\n\tScholarship for national athletes; Special scholarships (for world,\n\tOlympic, Europe and Turkey champions in different fields). Moreover\n\tscholarships were also given to students who were successful during\n\ttheir education<a href=\"#sdendnote1sym\"><sup>i<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\tThe\n\tuniversity had 302 academics and 9500 students in the closing date\n\tof July 2016. About ten percent of the students were international\n\tstudents from 80 different countries. Within the university campus\n\tarea, there were outdoor basketball and football fields and an\n\tindoor sports hall with a capacity of 600 audiences. Zirve\n\tUniversity basketball team was located at 3rd national league and\n\twon the Turkey Championships of University Sports Federation in\n\tTurkey in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\tZirve\n\tUniversity cooperated with many industrial organizations in\n\tGaziantep and carried out joint projects. Students put their\n\ttheoretical knowledge into practice by doing internships in\n\tcompanies working in the field of trade and industry. For this\n\tpurpose, an application workshop affiliated to the University was\n\toperating in the Industrial Zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\tZirve\n\tUniversity has an Erasmus agreement with about a hundred\n\tuniversities in Europe. University was located in the front ranks in\n\tterms of patent applications in Turkey. Zirve University, although\n\tit is a very new one, was in list of top 50 of the most\n\tentrepreneurial and innovative universities according to the\n\tScientific and Technical Research Institute of Turkey. Innovation\n\tand R &amp; D activities occupied an important place in university\n\tpractices. With the games staged in an organized way, the goods of the\nmost reliable businessmen in Gaziantep were blocked and\ninvestigations were started against them<a href=\"#sdendnote2sym\"><sup>ii<\/sup><\/a>.\nAs part of the Government&#8217;s operations against the Gulen Movement, a\nnew administration was appointed to the University Foundation and\ntherefore the University on 3 July 2016<a href=\"#sdendnote3sym\"><sup>iii<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Grievances\nafter July 15<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some\nstrange and unusual events that happened in the evening of July 15,\n2016 was considered a coup attempt in Turkey and on this basis the\nState of Emergency was declared in the whole of Turkey. On 16 July\n2016, Zirve University administration condemned the coup attempt and\nannounced its support for democracy<a href=\"#sdendnote4sym\"><sup>iv<\/sup><\/a>.\nHowever, the witch-hunting practices, which seem to have been planned\nin advance, were introduced before the \u201ccoup attempt\u201d was heard\nand understood. The detentions against the founders and managers of\nZirve University began in the following days<a href=\"#sdendnote5sym\"><sup>v<\/sup><\/a>,<a href=\"#sdendnote6sym\"><sup>vi<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zirve\nUniversity was closed down with the first State Decree of 23 July\n2016 concurrently with the other fourteen foundation universities\nunder the pretext of the suspected coup attempt on 15 July 2016<a href=\"#sdendnote7sym\"><sup>vii<\/sup><\/a>.\nEven the personal belongings of university faculty and staff were not\nallowed to be taken after the closure decision. Some of them were\nable to get some personal belongings after a long time. Academicians\nwho were left unemployed by this decree could not find jobs in any\nother academic and non-academic institutions<a href=\"#sdendnote8sym\"><sup>viii<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zirve\nUniversity was subjected to many attacks and slander just before and\nafter the closure. Some ironic events deserve to be included in the\nhistory books. When Zirve University was closed, there were 600\nexperimental animals in the Animals Laboratory of the University.\nGaziantep University, which is the guarantor state university,\nnormally and legally had to took over all the assets of the closed\nUniversity, including experimental animals. This situation presented\nto public opinion as if Zirve University had closed down on its own\nand Gaziantep State University had taken care of these animals<a href=\"#sdendnote9sym\"><sup>ix<\/sup><\/a>.\nIronically the Rector of the State University, Dr. Yavuz Co\u015fkun, was\na part of this deception and presented the situation as a source of\npride for himself. The licensed shooting range which was already\navailable in Campus was presented like a new discovery by Rector\nProf. Dr. Ali G\u00fcr to collect sympathy of government<a href=\"#sdendnote10sym\"><sup>x<\/sup><\/a>,<a href=\"#sdendnote11sym\"><sup>xi<\/sup><\/a>.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After\nthe alleged coup attempt, on August 8, 2016,  9 people of Zirve\nUniversity Founder of the Foundation Board of Trustees and business\npeople in administrative and academic staff from the University were\narrested<a href=\"#sdendnote12sym\"><sup>xii<\/sup><\/a>.\nOn August 21, 2016, 12 academicians from Zirve University were\ndetained on the same grounds<a href=\"#sdendnote13sym\"><sup>xiii<\/sup><\/a>.\nIn the next operation targeting the academician, 18 academics more\nwere detained and four of them were arrested<a href=\"#sdendnote14sym\"><sup>xiv<\/sup><\/a>.\nIn subsequent months and years, similar arrests continued unabated.\nThe University&#8217;s Board of Trustees, academics and administrative\nstaff were jailed pending trial for almost three years. In this\nprocess, which was initiated with the allegation of coup attempt and\ncontinued with the seizure of the assets of the University and the\nfounders of the foundation, all the accusations turned into\n\u201cTerrorist Organization Membership\u201d or \u201cTerrorist Organization\nManager\u201d. With the lynching of pro-government media,\nphilanthropists and academics were sentenced to imprisonment for up\nto 15 years. As a striking example, a court on 14. 05. 2019 sentenced\n19 people to 125 years, 8 months and 21 days of imprisonment<a href=\"#sdendnote15sym\"><sup>xv<\/sup><\/a>,<a href=\"#sdendnote16sym\"><sup>xvi<\/sup><\/a>.\nThe State University of Gaziantep clearly showed hostility towards\nthe students of the university it was the guarantor of, and\nvictimized them by throwing the documents in the trash. Some\ndocuments belonging to the university, after July 15, almost looted<a href=\"#sdendnote17sym\"><sup>xvii<\/sup><\/a>.\nThe efforts of othering and annihilating against the university were\nextended to foreign students working and studying at Zirve\nUniversity, and they were unable to find or study at other\ninstitutions. Many foreign teachers and students were deported just\nbecause they worked or studied in schools associated with the Gulen\nMovement<a href=\"#sdendnote18sym\"><sup>xviii<\/sup><\/a>.\nIn order to defame the university graduates, some investigations were\nconducted by claiming that some diplomas were questionable.\nUnfortunately, the country had media that was not ashamed to write\nthese unfounded claims and slanders<a href=\"#sdendnote19sym\"><sup>xix<\/sup><\/a>.\nZirve University&#8217;s large and well-equipped campus has always been the\nsubject of discussion. The University, which was built entirely with\ndonations, in the way of clearly infringing upon the foundation law,\nwas first given as the second campus area of Gaziantep University. In\nMay 2018, a new university was established on the campus of Zirve\nUniversity under the name of Gaziantep Science and Technology\nUniversity and this name was changed to Gaziantep Islamic Science and\nTechnology University on 17 January 2019<a href=\"#sdendnote20sym\"><sup>xx<\/sup><\/a>,<a href=\"#sdendnote21sym\"><sup>xxi<\/sup><\/a>.\nThis\nsquatter-style university, which has been established in place of\nZirve University, which is modern, professional in all aspects and\nfocused on innovation and competing with the world, looks like a\ncartoon of Zirve University.
